Day 1
TRAVEL TO HINTON WV •
RAILROAD DAYS FESTIVAL •
AUTUMN COLORS EXPRESS TRAIN
• HUNTINGTON WV • DINNER:
This morning we
travel north to Hinton WV to join in the excitement at
the Railroad Days Festival. Located right in the center
of Hinton, this annual event displays one-of-a-kind
handmade goods – purses, jewelry, household items,
décor, leather goods, and stained glass - along with
restored vintage items, birdhouses, and canned jellies
and jams. Local stores offer an assortment of items to
browse through, from clothes and shoes to souvenirs
and sundries. Then we climb aboard the Autumn Colors
Express, a vintage passenger train that takes us through
the heart of the scenic and historic New River Gorge
National Park for iconic views of West Virginia. We arrive
in Huntington and enjoy an included dinner before
checking into our hotel for a two night stay. (D)Day 2
MUSEUM OF RADIO &
TECHNOLOGY • HERITAGE FARM •
CENTRAL CITY ANTIQUES SHOPPING •
WE ARE MARSHALL TOUR • PULLMAN
SQUARE:
Our first stop this morning is
at the Museum of Radio & Technology,
one of the largest antique radio
museums in the United States. See
vintage radios, computers like they
used to be, hi-fi, and more! We have
lunch during our visit to Heritage Farm,
a recreated 19th century Appalachian
village that includes museum, animal
exhibits, artisans, and an adventure
park. Experience what life might have
been for the region’s settlers from the
1850s onward. Interact with animals in
the petting zoo and nature center. Next
we have time for shopping at Central
City Antiques District. Explore the art
gallery, farmers market, café, coffee
shop, and multiple antiques shops.
Each shop has a specialty, from vintage
garden to glassware, furniture, toys,
memorabilia, book, and more! A stepon
guide leads our “We Are Marshall”
tour. If you remember, in 1970, the
entire Marshall University football team
along with coaches and supporters,
lost their lives in a tragic plane crash
on a return flight home from East
Carolina. The story of how the school
and community rebuilt themselves was
told in the movie “We Are Marshall.”
Now we see where the movie was
filmed, visit pertinent locations, and
honor those lost at the Memorial
Fountain. We take a short break
at our hotel before heading over to
Pullman Square for dinner on our own
and shopping. Located in downtown
Huntington, the Square combines
a state-of-the-art multiplex movie
theater with shops, restaurants, cafes,
and unique entertainment venues,
all in a park-like setting. Take a stroll,
relax, shop, and grab some dinner. (L)Day 3
BLENKO GLASS • CHARLESTON
WV • CAPITOL MARKET • HOME:
It would be impossible to come
to this region without a visit to Blenko Glass, visiting the
museum and gift shop. A family owned and operated
business since 1893, Blenko is known for their exquisite
color, and imaginative designs that have made them
famous in the time-honored craft of hand-blown glass.
We travel on to Charleston WV as we head south, stopping
at Capitol Market, a vibrant part of West Virginia’s capital
city. Tucked in a turn-of-the-century train station, the
indoor-outdoor market offers an exciting mix of farm
goodness and specialty shops. Pick up seasonal goods
and WV-made gifts to take home. Order soup, salad or a
sandwich from one of the many lunch hot spots, or pop into
a lively Italian restaurant for a sit-down meal. Grab some
artisan chocolates and cheeses to enjoy on the ride home.
